Emergency Roof Tarping Guide

Emergency Summary

TL;DR: Wear fall protection, clear debris, overlap tarp 2–3 ft past leak, anchor with 2x4 battens into rafters (not just decking), seal edges, document for insurance, and schedule pro repairs within 7 days.

  • Roof pitch is steeper than 6/12 (26.5°)
  • Weather conditions are unsafe (rain, wind, lightning)
  • You don't have proper fall protection equipment

Detailed Step-by-Step Process

Step 1: Assess and Locate the Damage

  • Check from attic first - look for wet insulation and mark the area
  • Identify the leak source on the roof surface
  • Take photos for insurance documentation
  • Clear debris carefully without stepping on damaged areas

Step 2: Measure and Cut Tarp

  • Measure damaged area and add 2-3 feet on all sides
  • Tarp should extend from ridge to beyond the gutters
  • Cut tarp if necessary, but avoid weakening key areas
  • Plan battens every 2-3 feet along the edges

Step 3: Install Tarp (Critical Step)

  • Start at ridge: Position tarp to shed water downward
  • Overlap principle: Water should never flow "uphill" under the tarp
  • Smooth placement: Avoid wrinkles that can channel water
  • Coastal consideration: Account for Savannah's high winds

Step 4: Secure with Battens

  • Use 2x4 battens: Cut to appropriate lengths
  • Screw into rafters: Not just decking - find structural support
  • 3" screws minimum: Must penetrate through decking into rafters
  • Avoid valleys and flashing: Don't compromise existing waterproofing

Step 5: Seal and Finish

  • Seal batten edges with roofing tape
  • Check that tarp drains properly
  • Secure any loose edges with additional fasteners
  • Document completed work with photos

Insurance Documentation

Before, during, and after photos should include:

  • Original damage (close-up and wide shots)
  • Materials used and installation process
  • Completed emergency protection
  • Date/time stamps for all documentation

Important: Emergency tarping costs are often covered by insurance when done properly. Keep all receipts and document your work thoroughly.

Call Talya Roofing Immediately If:

  • Structural damage: Sagging, cracked rafters, or compromised support
  • Multiple leak points: Widespread damage requiring professional assessment
  • Steep roofs: Anything over 6/12 pitch is dangerous for DIY
  • Insurance claims: Professional documentation may be required
  • Complex roof geometry: Multiple valleys, dormers, or unusual shapes
